Wilderness Survival

As part of the Wilderness Survival merit badge (http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Wilderness_Survival) , Troop 226 traveled to the wilderness of Camp Jackson (http://www.campjackson.org/), located aproximately 5 miles east of Scottsboro on highway 40, just off Highway 35 on the Tennessee River at Jones Cove. Ten scouts and three adults braved the cold and were delighted that the primitive campsite was located near a bath house, with indoor plumbing, hot water, and flush toilets. The scouts built their shelter and slept overnight in it, they started fires, and completed merit badge course material.

Hiking the Appalachian Trail

Troop 226 backpacked the Appalachian Trail (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/) in Georgia for 3 days during Spring break. Three adult leaders drove and backpacked: Mr. Ford, Mr. Bosworth, and Mr. Karg. The Scouts, Ashton, Ben, Michael, Andrew, Sam, Joshua, Colin, and Cameron, began at Dicks Creek Gap on Saturday and hiked 3.5 miles to Deep Gap Shelter, where coffee and cocoa warmed the boys, and macaroni and cheese filled their stomachs. The troop spent the night in tents since the shelter was already occupied. The Sunday hike was a 7.5 mile hike to Tray Mountain Shelter, with a break for summer sausage, cheese, and crackers for lunch. Dinner was served at Tray Mountain Shelter, and Joshua led vespers. Oatmeal was served again on Monday morning for breakfast, and the troop hiked 5.6 miles to the cars at Unicoi Gap. See the photos in the photo gallery (gallery/v/hiking/at/2009/).
